One of my Clients
Elaine had been married for 15 years. Her children were all in school full time and she wanted to do something else with her life. Her husband was very supportive and encouraged her to explore her options. She began considering what kinds of things she could do while her children were in school but things began to get overwhelming. Her friends and family all made suggestions and Elaine’s head was spinning. She decided to call me for an initial session and she talked about what had been going on in her life. After that first session, she decided that she’d like to explore her thoughts a bit more and we set up our next session. I sent her some ideas to think about before the next call and told her to take a break from listening to the ideas of others and concentrate on honestly looking at the material I sent her. Elaine called for her second session and told me she had looked over the material I sent her. She made a point to keep this material to herself and not to discuss the ideas with anyone. She felt it helped her clear her mind and concentrate on what she wanted to do next with her life.

Together we set a “take away” for the session and she began talking. I asked her many questions and got her to calm down and tune in to her own reactions to the questions and her feelings as she answered those questions. Our sessions continued for several months and Elaine has now got specific goals, a step-by-step plan and time-line for reaching those goals. She is working on her own now, with the understanding that she will schedule periodic sessions, we set the dates ahead of time, when she will “check-in” and I will support the work she’s doing to reach her goals and help her “revamp” steps, if necessary, to be sure her progress continues.
